About Us

AFTS specializes in Firearms education and training courses to fit your learning styles. We offer individual and small class environments to facilitate learning with "your pace" in mind. AFTS offers customized trainings and curriculums to foster experiential learning. Courses are scheduled according to your need and availability.

Our mission is to create a highly adaptive and experiential learning environment for all participants.

A.F.T.S. uses “live fire” training and exercises. Although there is some benefit to computerized firearms simulators, we feel there is no way to exactly replicate muzzle flash and recoil management. Whether you are taking your first shots, interested in home defense or tactical applications, we have the courses to suit your changing needs. Our curriculum will grow as your skill level develops.

AFTS is a modern firearms school that is based on experiential based learning. We specialize in firearms licensing certification, education and training. We also specialize in wilderness/remote medical training and "everything outdoors!"

Joe Joe Hattabaugh, President of AFTS has been involved in the firearms community as a hunter, competitor, Law Enforcement professional, NRA Range safety Officer and NRA Certified Firearms Instructor for over 25 years.  Joe truly believes in educating those around him and is constantly seeking to further his education in order to ensure the most effective learning environment possible for his students.  Joe has had an extensive resume teaching many different disciplines other than just Firearms courses. His background ranges from Wilderness Guide, Rock Climbing Guide, Wilderness/Remote Medicine (WEMT Instructor), Mountain Search & Rescue and Wilderness Survival Craft.
As an NRA Certified Instructor Joe takes the NRA curriculum and blends it with his own open and experiential style of teaching.  The AFTS course curriculum, which is centered on personal awareness, experiential learning and Firearms Safety.
Joe ensures that all AFTS Courses are run at the pace of his students and personally takes the time to answer all questions further ensuring that each student leaves the course not only knowledgeable but more importantly comfortable with the information at hand. Whatever the subject may be Joe’s passion for teaching can be seen and felt throughout by his students.
Joe Joe’s training and influence comes from both Law Enforcement and Military exposure. As a full-time Law Enforcement Trainer and Contract Instructor, Joe has trained with and learned from seasoned operators from members of the 7th Special Forces Group, SFARTAETC, Federal Bureau of Prisons SORT team, US Secret Service, MPTC, MSA and top local competitive shooters.
With this diverse training background Joe has been able to devise a firearms curriculum to meet any and all levels of competitive and tactical needs.  AFTS Staff and Guest Instructors can fill any gap in your training development spectrum.
